Contraception, Resistance, Abortion: The Data Nobody Compares
Countries with the best contraception access have the lowest antibiotic resistance AND the lowest abortion rates. The mechanism is institutional, not biological. Here is the data.
1.27M
deaths per year
Directly attributable to antimicrobial resistance. 2019 baseline (Lancet). 2021 update: 1.14M.
39M
projected deaths by 2050
Cumulative AMR mortality. Lancet Sept 2024. Up to 8.22M associated deaths per year.
73M
abortions per year
61% of unintended pregnancies. Rates similar whether legal or not. 45% are unsafe.
259M
women
Lack access to modern contraception despite wanting to avoid pregnancy. (UNFPA 2024)

The Confounder
The contraception-AMR correlation is real. But economic development drives both. Israel (TFR 3.0, moderate AMR) and Japan (TFR 1.2, rising AMR in elderly) both complicate the simple narrative. The mechanism is institutional: good governance produces both good reproductive health AND good antibiotic stewardship. The same failures that restrict contraception also enable antibiotic misuse.
“The world cannot be understood without numbers. And it cannot be understood with numbers alone.”
— Hans Rosling, Factfulness (2018)
The data doesn’t care about your morals. Countries that trust women with their own bodies also trust science with their medicine. The correlation is institutional, not biological. And it kills in both directions.
